Why screens make your brain stay awake

Scrolling can feel relaxing while still keeping your brain switched on.

Passive does not always mean calming.

Phones combine light, novelty, movement, and emotional input in one place. Even when you are lying still, your brain is still receiving stimulation.

That matters because sleep usually arrives through a drop in activation, not through one more stream of interesting content. Screens often work against that shift.

This is why bedtime scrolling can feel soothing in the moment but expensive later. It gives your mind something to do when what it really needs is less to process.
